NAT Protocol Translation for IP Address

Learn how Prisma SD-WAN allows IPv4 and IPv6 devices to connect using NAT Protocol Translation.

Problem Statement

IPv4 and IPv6 devices cannot communicate directly due to differing addressing and data transmission protocols. This incompatibility complicates network operations and hinders the full adoption of IPv6.

Solution: NAT for Protocol Translation

Prisma SD-WAN uses NAT for protocol translation. This feature allows devices in different IP address families to communicate with each other. It works by translating packet headers and addresses.

Prerequisites for IPv6 NAT Support on ION

To use NAT on your Prisma SD-WAN ION device, ensure the following requirements are met:
  • Prisma SD-WAN: A valid Prisma SD-WAN license is required.
  • ION Device Version: The device must run version 6.4.2 or higher.
  • NAT-PT Gateway (for NAT64):
    • A NAT-PT Gateway must be configured in the network, positioned before the Internet Gateway.
    • The service provider needs to support the well-known prefix (WKP) block 64:ff9b.
Without the NAT-PT (NAT64) Gateway support, NAT64 use cases do not function. For more information, see NAT 64.
  • DNS64 (for NAT46):
    • DNS64 must be configured to support NAT46 use cases.
    • The service provider needs to support the well-known prefix (WKP) block 64:ff9b.
Without DNS64 support, NAT46 use cases do not function.
