Configure IPv6 Multicast Routing

Configure IPv6 Multicast Routing (PIMv6) and Multicast Listener Discovery (MLD) on a virtual router to enable your firewall to manage and forward IPv6 multicast traffic.
Where Can I Use This? What Do I Need?
  • NGFW
  • Advanced Routing Engine
Use this procedure to configure IPv6 Multicast Routing (PIMv6) and Multicast Listener Discovery (MLD) on a virtual router in your network. This enables your firewall to manage and forward IPv6 multicast traffic.
  • igmp-query-profile is now query-profile—the same profile is shared between IGMP (IPv4) and MLD (IPv6). If you have existing IGMP query profiles, they are migrated automatically on upgrade.
  • Clustering is not supported in this release.
  • Hardware offload (FE100/400) is not supported in this release.
  • IPv6 multicast is supported only on platforms with the Advanced Routing Engine. PA-220R, PA-820, and PA-850 do not qualify.
  1. Select Network to access network-related settings.
  2. Select Virtual Routers and select the desired Virtual Logical Router instance.
This applies PIMv6 configuration within its designated domain.
  3. Within the Logical Router settings, select the Multicast tab.
This provides a centralized interface for PIMv6 and MLD settings.
  4. Enable IPv6 Multicast.
    1. Select the PIM6 sub-tab.
    2. Select the Enable checkbox for PIM6.
This activates the PIMv6 routing protocol on your virtual router.
  5. Configure Multicast Listener Discovery (MLD) interfaces.
    1. Select the MLD sub-tab.
    2. Select Add to configure a new MLD interface.
    3. In the Interface field, select the IPv6 interface for MLD.
    4. In the Version dropdown, select MLDv1 or MLDv2.
    5. Configure other MLD parameters as required, such as Query Interval or Robustness Value.
    6. Select OK.
  6. (PIM-SM only) Configure Rendezvous Points (RPs) in your PIM Sparse Mode environment.
    1. Select the PIM6 sub-tab.
    2. Select the RP sub-tab.
    3. Select Add to configure a new RP.
    4. Choose the RP Type, such as Static RP or Local RP.
    5. Enter the RP Address and define the Group List it serves.
    6. Select OK.
  7. Define Static Multicast Routes.
    1. Select the Multicast tab within the Virtual Router settings.
    2. Select the Static Routes sub-tab.
    3. Select Add to create a new static multicast route.
    4. Enter the Source Address and Group Address.
    5. Select the Outgoing Interface.
    6. Select OK.
  8. Commit the changes to apply the configuration.
This saves and activates your new multicast routing capabilities.
